How to Make Games Successful in Your Classroom

  • Choose games that match your current classroom objectives.
  • Don't just use games to fill time. Integrate them as part of your regular lesson planning.
  • Customize the game to fit the level of your students and then revise the rules to challenge them. This book includes adaptation ideas for all 42 games.
  • Pick one of the simpler games to send home as part of a regular homework assignment.
  • Try different numbers of players--two, four, and team groups.

By using Math File Folder Games at home or in your classroom with your upper elementary and middle school kids, you can provide them with hours of fun-filled learning time. And the best part is you'll get into the spirit and enjoy yourself, too!

Here's a Few More Examples:

5 Dice: Order of Operations Games

5 Dice: Order of Operations Game is a math game intended for upper elementary and middle school students that helps students enjoy practicing their order of operations. This order of operation activity encourages students to use higher order thinking to solve the "target" number by working backwards given the answer but not the equation.

Grid Lines - Coordinate Grid Game

Grid Lines is a Battleship-style math game used to teach students the coordinate plane. Students will get practice plotting points on a coordinate plane by playing a game similar to Battleship.

Entrapment: Transformation Math Games

This visually challenging game helps students understand congruence through translation (slides), rotations (turns), or reflections (flips). At the beginning, when the board is completely open and no squares have been filled in the game doesn't appear to be too difficult. After all, we're just filling in patterns of squares, right?

The Mean Game

Construct sets of data given measures of central tendency and variability.

Factors: Multiples, Factors, Composites and Primes Game

This fun Factors Game helps kids to more fully understand what prime factorization is all about. By systematically finding the factors of different numbers, kids will see the prime numbers magically appear.

Ordered Fractions: Compare and Order Fractions Game

Ordered Fractions game begins by rolling the dice, students then insert these numbers into the boxes on the board, which creates the fractions. Students then position the fractions in ascending (or descending) order by comparing fractions.

Substitution Cross-Off - Solving Equations then Graph and Analyze the Relation

Substitute numbers for variables in expressions, and graph and analyze the relation. The chosen value is then entered into any one of four equations (as the x-value, thus determining the y-value).

Unlucky Zeros: Reciprocals Fractions Games

Unlucky Zeros is a great game for teaching the concept of multiplicative inverses. The terms multiplicative inverse and multiplicative reciprocal, which mean the same thing, are difficult for students to remember and understand when they're first introduced in a classroom presentation.
